Every publication concerning alcohol, always seem to point towards the direction of the hazards that accompany its consumption. It is not common to hear any benefit related to the intake of alcohol. This does not mean, however, that alcohol is all bad and detrimental to our health.
Contrary to popular opinion, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans states clearly that “moderate alcohol consumption per day should be one drink for women and two for men”. Adherence to this strict guidelines will ensure that you enjoy the many health benefits of alcohol, some of which will be discussed in this article.
Health benefits associated with moderate alcohol intake vary and their manifestation depends greatly on the body make-up of the individual consuming it. That being said, let’s get all the negativity out and that a different look at the benefit of cracking one or two bottles open per day ( when you are of a legal drinking age, of course, we don’t want to be breaking any law, do we?)
1. Brain Sharpness
While it has been established medically, that excessive intake of alcohol damages brain cells, moderate intake does the direct opposite. Although alcohol is not going to turn you into a genius, it sure helps to improve the brain and keep it sharp. It contains ethanol which helps the brain and its neurons to resist wear and tear. This wear and tear have over the years been largely responsible for health conditions peculiar to old people such Dementia, Alzheimer, and much more. Remember, only moderate consumption of alcohol brings about these benefits.
2. Reduced Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases
This is probably difficult to believe but it is indeed true. Moderate consumption of alcohol can provide the body with the right amount of Phenols, High-Density Lipo-Protein or “good” cholesterol as it is generally called, responsible for protecting the heart from diseases that are peculiar to it. Moderate alcohol consumption has also been found to improve blood clothing, which will, in turn, prevent the blocking of arteries in the brain, heart, and neck. Overall, it eliminates the major causes of heart diseases, attack and eventual stroke. These benefits from the moderate intake of alcohol are only applicable to people who have not been diagnosed with heart-related conditions in the past.
3. Reduced Risk of Gallstones
It is such a wonder what the moderate consumption of one or two bottles of alcohol per day can do for your body. A study carried out by researchers at the University of East Anglia, has shown that people who observe a moderate consumption of alcohol stand a better chance of reducing the possibility of developing gallstones by one-third. Their study, however, was balanced by the emphasis laid on moderate alcohol consumption and the health risk associated with its excessive intake.
4. Increased Lifespan
Alcohol has a unique ability to induce longevity genes and which increases lifespan in the long run when consumed moderately. This rare capability of alcohol is enhanced when alcohol is consumed in small amounts during a meal. Alcohol and wine are best suited to be taken along with lunch or dinner but the rest of the day should be alcohol-free. A Recent study conducted by the University of Campobasso backs these claims up and further states the possibility of reducing the risk of death by 18% through moderate consumption of alcohol daily.
5. Reduced Chances of Diabetes
People who don’t drink alcohol at all stand a higher chance of developing Type 2 Diabetes when compared to people who take one or two bottles per day. This claim is further substantiated by the result of a Dutch study; the researchers further elaborated in an information given to Reuters that moderate alcohol intake can contribute to a healthy lifestyle that ultimately helps prevent diabetes.
6. Production of “Good” and Useful Cholesterol
The presence of excess cholesterol in the human body can be hazardous but there is also what is known as good cholesterol and alcohol may just be a way of getting them. Red wine is mostly the major producer of the so-called good cholesterol. Alcohol especially wine help to boost HDL Cholesterol level, which in-turn helps to clear out bad cholesterol from the body leaving behind only the good ones.
7. Increased Libido
Excessive intake of alcohol may be related to ED (Erectile Dysfunction) but the moderate intake does the direct opposite. In fact, the same way red wine can help reduce the risk of a heart disease, so also can moderate alcohol intake reduce the chances of Erectile Dysfunction. A 2009 publication in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, shows the result of a research which clearly states the reduction in chances of Erectile Dysfunction by 25-30% in men that consume alcohol moderately. However, the research did not confirm the claims but also promised to publish results of research carried out to connect excess alcohol intake with sexual “dullness”.
8. Solution for Common Cold
If you are battling with a common cold, a drink or two might just be the solution that you need (if you are above the stipulated drinking age). Most of the researchers conducted around 2002 suggested that consumption of alcohol especially red wine reduced the possibility of having a common cold by 60%. This is majorly attributed to the antioxidant properties of these alcoholic beverages. Moderation in consumption is advised.
9. Cure for a sore throat
A Sore throat can be treated instantly if you can combine a moderate shot of whiskey with water. This combination soothes throat soreness and discomfort.
10. Clear Bad Breathe
Bacteria that causes bad breathe can be flushed out of the mouth by taking a shot of vodka. Vodka contains a high concentration of alcohol and hence kill bacteria that cause bad odor in the mouth. The trick is to spit out the vodka and not swallow it, also avoid taking alcohol beverages with high sugar content.
DO NOT drink and drive!
As earlier stated, this article is not designed to promote excessive intake of alcohol but to highlight the importance of sticking to a moderate intake.
