The best ever 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class showed its face at the recent Shanghai Auto Show. Since its showcase, the model has received praises from all over the globe with some enthusiasts terming it the best car in the globe. This is one model that sends chills to Audi and BMW as they try to improve their A8 and 7-Series sedans to match the S-Class every time it shows a new face. The model is stunning, to say the least and surprisingly, it is just a mid-cycle facelift, which hints to even better things four years from now when the automaker reveals the new generation of the record-breaking sedan. The facelift was timely, as BMW has already released an ultra-modern 7-Series. You can bet that Audi is closely watching as the affairs in this class unfold ready to strike anytime with the Audi A8 luxury sedan. All three automakers are trying to outshine each other in terms of the autonomous tech used with the A8 expected to beat the 7-Series and the S-Class when Audi launches it. These automakers already almost match each other in all other aspects leaving autonomous systems as the new area of contention.
2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Exterior
The S-Class has an attractive exterior with a somewhat timeless beauty that the automaker would not want to alter. As such, the S-Class features just minor upgrades on the outside. The S450 and S560 feature a new grille. On the other hand, the Maybach S560 has a chrome trim as well as Maybach logos between its grille’s louvers. AMG models also feature a “jet wing”-like front bumper as well as a 3D front splitter. All models also feature Ultra Wide Beam high-beam headlamps and LED Intelligent Light System.
There is a choice between two, 20-inch wheel deigns but on its part, the range-topping S65 rides on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels that also feature ceramic mirror polishing.
Well, Mercedes always keeps its rivals in this segment on their heels and it is not different this time either. The new cabin has been improved. The model comes with a new leather trim, open-pore wood trim and new color tones that make up for amazing combinations. The steering wheel is also new; it is a flat-bottomed, 3-spoke unit that looks sportier than the outgoing unit, but some people will feel the unit on the outgoing model was better.
Before, Mercedes unveiled this facelifted S-Class; the model had been dethroned as the most advanced premium sedan in the market by the 7-Series and even the automaker’s own E-Class. The new upgrades have however put the model back to its rightful place at the top of the luxury chain.
The automaker has improved almost every feature in the cabin including adding touch-sensitive steering wheel controls, wireless charging, upgraded audio system, Keyless start and a new display system that bundles all display screen under a single sheet of glass which makes the display look more streamlined.
The automaker has added a revolutionary comfort feature dubbed the “ENERGIZING Comfort. It links different comfort features such as heating, climate control and lighting to create a bespoke setup that is tailored to the driver’s mood.
However, the most exciting features are the updated semi-autonomous systems. The S-Class comes with a Remote Parking Assist, Active Proximity Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Steer Assist and Active Emergency Stop function.
Engine and performance
The 2018 S-Class will see an introduction of new engines. In the base S450 and the S450 4Matic, the automaker features a 3.0 L, twin-turbocharged V-6 mill that produces 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The S560 and Maybach S560 4Matic features a 4.0 L, a twin-turbocharged V-8 mill that makes 463 horses and 516 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes say that this V-8 mill improves fuel economy by 10% compared with the engine it has replaced, making it Mercedes most fuel-efficient V-8 engine ever built.
Moving higher, the AMG S63 model is hooked up with a hand-built, 4.0 L, a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that produces 603 hp and664 lb-ft of torque. This mill also features cylinder-deactivation technology. The engine powers the sedan to hit 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. The engine is paired with an AMG-Speedshift 9-speed automatic transmission that channels power to all wheels via AMG Performance 4Matic+ AWD system. It features a Race Start function that is available on Sport and Sport+ modes. The function enables for maximum acceleration. It is also hooked up with a performance-tuned exhaust system that produces different sounds depending on the driving mode selected.
The top-of-the-range AMG S65 is equipped with a 6.0 L, twin-turbocharged V-12 engine that puts out 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission. Despite it being the top dog of the lineup, it is a bit slower than the S63 as it takes 4.2 seconds to hit 60 mph. The model is similar to the S63 but it adds an AMG Sport suspension that derives inspiration from the Magic Body Control that features adjustable ride height and curve-tilting.
Price and release date
Mercedes has not said anything about the new premium sedan’s prices. The model will be released later this year.
It must be obvious by now that the top rivals of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class are the BMW 7-Series and Audi A8.
